Vulnerable children over 12 could be offered Covid jab

Vaccines minister Nadim Zahawi has announced some children will be offered a Covid jab ahead of the winter.

In an interview with BBC Breakfast Mr Zahawai said children aged 12 to 17 who are vulnerable to coronavirus through underlying health conditions would be eligible for vaccination, along with anyone close to their 18th birthday.

A decision is yet to be made on whether those without any health conditions will be jabbed but it is being “kept under review”

Mr Zahawai added: “There’s lots of good data from America on first doses for healthy children, but there’s obviously a gap for those same children getting second doses.”

The vaccines minister also said that the Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation (JCVI) will recommend that children approaching their 18th birthday should have the vaccine too, as well as those who live with clinically vulnerable people.

Mr Zahawai said: “The JCVI looked at vulnerable children, they will recommend that vulnerable children should be protected.

“Children living with vulnerable adults should also be protected, and of course 17-year-olds who are close to their 18th birthday should also be protected.”

The UK is set to announce its vaccine rollout plan for children around 3.30pm today.
