Vue cinema chain makes plans for reopening in time for Christopher Nolan film

One of the country's largest cinema chains has outlined how it may reopen as the lockdown is eased.

Following the Government's announcement that cinemas may be allowed to swing open their doors from July 4, Vue has suggested how it might do this in a safe manner.

The chain said measures such as using an online booking system to sit family groups and couples in isolated units were being conisidered.

The staggering of screens to reduce congestion in the buildings was also on the cards.

Vue, which has 91 cinemas in the UK, released a statement which read: "We have been liaising closely with authorities across Europe to design operating procedures that can provide the degree of social distancing required and allow an experience for our customers and staff that is as safe as possible.

“We look forward to working further with the government and the UK Cinema Association in the coming days to demonstrate the specific steps we will take in the UK, including physically isolating family groups through our online booking systems, staggering film times to maintain social distancing and operate responsibly, and introducing enhanced cleaning and employee-protection protocols.

“Big screen entertainment is a force for good in society.

"Providing an accessible and controlled way for families to begin to enjoy life outside their homes and we are excited to be able to start planning for a future where we can enjoy movies together again.”

Tim Richards, who runs the chain, said he would like Vue cinemas to be open before Christopher Nolan's 'Tenet' is released.

He has previously said that reducing the capacity of screens was also a measure being considered.

Cinemas, theatres, concert halls and museums will have to prove that they are 'Covid-19' secure in order to reopen.

According to the latest Government document on the issue: "Some venues which are, by design, crowded and where it may prove difficult to enact distancing may still not be able to re-open safely [in July], or may be able to open safely only in part."
