ReCode, the well-regarded tech news site, announced on Tuesday that it is being taken over by Vox Media, the digital media company behind Vox.com, Eater and the Verge.
Founded by former Wall Street Journal staffers Kara Swisher and Walt Mossberg, the site has a history of Silicon Valley scoops and runs a high-profile technology conference.
ReCode, then known as AllThingsD, started life as a blog owned by WSJ parent Dow Jones. Swisher and Mossberg parted company with Dow Jones 18 months ago.
Terms of the deal were not announced. “Re/code will benefit from joining Vox Media by integrating Vox Media’s various capabilities – including marketing, communications, audience development, sales and production,” the company said in a statement.
“We plan as well to collaborate where appropriate with Vox Media’s current and very successful tech news site, The Verge. While the two sites occasionally overlap, we have focused on the business of tech, while The Verge has focused on covering tech from a lifestyle perspective.”
The sale comes amid a shakeup in digital media. In March Gigaom, a nine-year-old tech website, closed suddenly when its funding dried up. Circa, a new aggregation website, is reportedly seeking a buyer.
