Voters in Northumberland contend with snow to get to polling station

Snow has fallen during the December 12 general election, with people waking up to sub-zero temperatures on the border of Northumberland and Cumbria.

Thousands of voters will be heading out in the freezing conditions to cast their vote.

As today's general election is the first to be held in December since 1932, concerns have been raised about wintry conditions impacting voter turn out.

Polling stations in Northumberland, and across the UK, are open between 7am-10pm with conditions are expected to stay chilly throughout today.

Snow has been reported to be mainly on the higher ground with all roads remaining passable due to the light covering.

PA photographer, Owen Humphrey said: "It was -1c when I arrived in Northumberland and which then went to 0."

"The polling station in Nenthead said they had a steady turn out even with the weather."
