'Vote Mustafi' - Arsenal fans hijack poll to ensure Liverpool's Virgil van Dijk is beaten

It’s just a few days until Arsenal are back in action for the 2020/21 season.

The Gunners had a disappointing league season in the previous campaign, but did enjoy success in the FA Cup, coming out as 2-1 winners against Chelsea at Wembley Stadium at the start of the month.

That victory not only meant that Arsenal had silverware to show for the season, but also ensured that they would be playing Europa League football next season as well as competing against Liverpool in the Community Shield at Wembley Stadium.

The game takes place on Saturday, August 29 as both Arsenal and Liverpool look to kick off their new season with a positive result and performance.

Arsenal Premier League fixture list

Ahead of the match, the Emirates FA Cup official Twitter account has been running polls to find a combined XI of both Arsenal and Liverpool players.

And there is one position that has caught the attention of Arsenal fans.

For one of the centre-back positions, Arsenal’s Shkodran Mustafi is going up against Liverpool’s Virgil Van Dijk, a player who is considered one of the world’s best defenders.

In normal circumstances, it would be fair to say that Van dijk would be expected to win.

However, Arsenal fans have other ideas.

The two defenders may come up against each other for real at Wembley Stadium on Saturday.

Mustafi was initially frozen out of the Arsenal squad at the start of the 2019/20 season, making his first Premier League appearance in December in the 2-2 draw against Norwich.

But his Arsenal career has had a revival under Mikel Arteta, although he did miss the FA Cup final victory over Chelsea after suffering a knee injury.
