Vote for Britain’s favourite dog breed as WalesOnline pick ranks in top five

Border Collies currently rank in the top five in the race to find the UK's favourite dog breed - but with weeks still to go until the competition ends they need your vote to stay in the running.

Competition for the top spot has been fierce with more than 2,000 votes cast from across the country so far.

Wales Online is backing Border Collies as the nation’s most cherished breed - currently in fourth place - but you can vote for whichever dog you like the most at our sister site TeamDogs.

Don’t worry if you’ve already taken part - from today you will be able to register a second vote.

Every Friday morning, the 10 least popular breeds are dropped from the competition so make sure you don’t miss your chance to keep your favourite in the running.

Those eliminated on Friday were Basset Fauve De Bretagne, Welsh Springers, Havanese, Poochon, Irish Setter, Maltipom, St Bernard, Irish Wolfhound, Pekingese and Afghan Hounds.

A further 10 are now in the ‘dog house’ section of the leaderboard and risk being relegated later this week.

Border Collies are extremely intelligent and are known for their place on a farm herding sheep.

The dogs, bred for farm work, are also amazing pets and very loving, with a gentle nature.

If you’ve ever owned a collie, you may be familiar with their intense stare – a technique used by working collies when facing stubborn sheep who have broken away with the herd. Collies often use this tactic on their toys and become fixated on them.

With their human-like eyes and long soft fur, we couldn’t help but choose the beautiful breed for the win.

Our readers had a lot to say in support of the sheepdogs.

Warren Davies said on Facebook: “Collies are just amazing, never had a dog like the one I had.”

Howard Thomas added: “Border Collie for me. Had about 12 in all at various times. So intelligent and loyal but need lots of exercise.”

Make sure to support your favourite breed to keep them in the running. You can see the leaderboard and cast your vote here.
