Vote Compass: Two-thirds of women want minimum wage to be higher

Nearly two-thirds of women surveyed in Vote Compass want the minimum wage to be higher, but less than half of men share their view.

The current minimum wage is $17.29 per hour or $656.90 for a full-time work week.

While it's difficult to determine who is on the minimum wage, there is evidence that more women than men get paid at the lowest pay level.

That's due to a number of factors, including periods of time out of the workforce to care for family, the proportion of women working in lower-paid occupations, and gender discrimination.

Women in full-time jobs get paid on average $277.70 week less than men, according to the government's Workplace Gender Equality Agency.

These findings are based on 230,641 respondents who participated in Vote Compass from May 8 to May 25, 2016. The data has been weighted to ensure the sample reflects the Australian population. [ Read the Vote Compass data FAQ ]
