Vote Compass: Australians split on teaching kids about 'invasion'

Australians are split on whether school textbooks should refer to the arrival of European colonists in Australia as an "invasion" of Aboriginal lands, Vote Compass data suggests.

In March, commercial radio hosts and the Daily Telegraph criticised new University of New South Wales guidelines that suggested references to Australia being "settled" should instead be "invaded" and noted it was offensive to say Captain Cook "discovered" Australia.

At the time, Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk said it was time to say Australia was invaded.

"For many years, Australian schools and Australian institutions have not told the truth about the way in which Australia was settled," she said. "A lot of Indigenous people lost their lives — there were massacres and the truth always must be told."

The Vote Compass results are based on more than 10,000 respondents who participated between May 14 and May 18, 2016. The data has been weighted to ensure the sample reflects the Australian population. [Read the Vote Compass data FAQ]
