Voss to meet Blues about AFL coaching job

Michael Voss is the warm favourite to land the vacant AFL head coaching job at Carlton. (AAP)

Michael Voss has touched down in Melbourne as the Brisbane Lions legend closes in becoming Carlton's new AFL coach.

Voss left South Australia, where he has lived for the past seven years as an assistant coach with Port Adelaide, on Wednesday.

The 46-year-old will sit down with the Blues, including new chief executive Brian Cook, for his final interview this week.

Due to border restrictions, Voss' previous communication with Carlton about becoming the club's new coach has happened via video calls.

He is the hot favourite to fill the vacancy left by David Teague, who was sacked in August after two-and-a-half seasons in charge.

Voss and Richmond assistant Adam Kingsley are the only ones left vying for the job after Carlton's numerous approaches to Alastair Clarkson were knocked back by the four-time Hawthorn premiership coach.

If Voss lands the role, as expected, it would cap off an interesting journey to leading the Blues.

He was sought out by Carlton at the end of 2007 to replace Denis Pagan, but Voss opted not to interview for the role.

In 2019, Voss decided to interview after Carlton sacked Brendon Bolton, but Teague was ultimately given the job following a groundswell of fan support.

The three-time Lions premiership captain had two years in the media after his Hall of Fame playing career end in 2006, before being appointed Brisbane coach ahead of the 2009 season.

His tenure started in promising fashion, taking the Lions to the semi-finals in his first year in charge, but it was all downhill from there.

Voss was sacked in 2013, after leading the Lions to just 42 wins from 107 games.
