Von Miller took Mike Vrabel’s potential refund ticket for disqualified Kentucky Derby winner

Broncos outside linebacker Von Miller worked for NBC as a lifestyle correspondent at the Kentucky Derby earlier this month. The event wasn’t all work and no play, though, as Miller placed a bet on Maximum Security to win the race.

Maximum Security ended up winning the race but Miller didn’t get to collect any winnings because the horse was disqualified.

“I had money on that horse, so I was . . . I was at the ticket box like, ‘Yeah! Yeah!’” Miller said after practice Monday. “Then I was like, ‘What?’ I would’ve liked for it to have went the other way, but I guess that’s horse racing. I saw the replay and he kind of did veer off and it really caused a chain reaction through everybody else.

“There was another horse that was coming hot. He probably would have won the race, but the chain reaction kind of slowed all of the horses down. I’m not a horse expert. I just had a little bit of time at the Kentucky Derby, but I definitely see why it was a problem.”

Miller kept the ticket he received for the bet — and he acquired another one, too.

“I still got it,” Miller said. “[Titans] Coach [Mike] Vrabel was there. He had the same amount of money on the same horse that I did. He threw his ticket down. I was like, ‘Hey, we might be able to . . .’ I picked his ticket up too and I have both of the tickets saved. They said that we can get a refund for those tickets, so I got plus two on that.”

Miller’s remark about potentially cashing in Vrabel’s refund ticket was likely made in jest because he wouldn’t be able to prove he purchased that ticket. And there’s only one online wagering service that has offered refunds and those are only good for bets worth up to $10.

It’s probably safe to assume that Miller and Vrabel bet much more than $10. So the Denver linebacker and Tennessee coach probably won’t be getting their money back.
