Von Miller says Joe Flacco threw an 80-yard pass at Broncos practice

Broncos defenders have certainly taken notice of Joe Flacco’s arm strength this offseason. Defensive lineman Shelby Harris and cornerback Bryce Callahan have both described the QB’s arm as a “cannon.”

After the team’s opening minicamp practice Tuesday, outside linebacker Von Miller described the kind of big throws Flacco has been unleashing.

“He looks like a Super Bowl MVP to me,” Miller said. “He’s throwing the ball. Today he rode out in a play action out to the right and threw the ball from the opposite 20 to the opposite 15. I don’t know how far that is, but he threw the ball far, [and the receiver] almost caught the ball.”

That would be a 65-yard pass, which is impressive. Miller indicated that Flacco can throw even farther than that, too.

“He can throw 80 yards easily,” Miller said. “He threw it 80 yards across the field. That’s looking like Super Bowl energy to me.”

Flacco was asked after practice just how far he can throw a football.

“I have no idea,” Flacco said. “I hope I don’t have to throw the ball too far. You want to get the ball out and get it in rhythm. Hopefully 50 yards down field — you won’t push it down much further than that.

“I would think that in the air up here that you actually can go a few more yards. I have no idea how far I can throw the ball up here. I haven’t really tried and I don’t really plan on going out there and trying to do it.”

OK, Joe, you don’t want to throw a ball as far as you can just for the sake of flexing. But what if Denver is in a Hail Mary situation — how close would you need the offense to be to get the ball into the end zone?

“If we’re on the opposite 30-yard line, I think I could pretty comfortably get it into the end zone,” Flacco said. “I hope so.”
