Volunteers wanted to spend 22 weeks working on stunning remote Scottish island

A search is underway by the Scottish Wildlife Trust for volunteers to spend 22 weeks on a remote Scottish island.

The charity are currently recruiting for four assistant rangers to deliver visitor and conservation management on the stunning Handa Island wildlife Reserve.

Located off the west coast of Sutherland around 40 miles north of Ullapool, the island is renowned for its gorgeous white sandy beaches, 120-metre high cliffs and spectacular vistas - as well as its population of nearly 100,000 seabirds who breed there in the summer.

The unpaid role lasts from March 22 to August 31, and involves working with the Handa ranger and the other volunteers to carry out practical work, land visitors and provide information, monitoring seabirds and the productivity of great and Arctic skua populations.

The work involves constructing and repairing boardwalk, beach cleaning, firewood collection, managing the bothy and its water system and sign maintenance and being responsible for the visitor shelter and shop (promoting items for sale) in the afternoons.

Among the list of essential attributes necessary for candidates to possess are fieldwork experience and the ability to navigate using map, compass & GPS, ability with a variety of hand tools, a desire to pursue career in conservation and a love of being outside.

Candidates should also have a good level of health and fitness and be comfortable working at heights and around cliffs.

The closing date for applications is Monday, February 9.
