
AN award-winning and respected volunteer service that assists victims and witnesses of crime navigate the often traumatic court process is looking to recruit volunteers.
Established at Newcastle courthouse in October 2018, Victims and Witnesses of Crime Court Support (VWCCS) Newcastle was the 2020 winner of the Volunteer Team of the Year Award for Newcastle and the Hunter.
The service says since its launch court support officers have assisted more than 400 victims and witnesses in the local court, more than 140 in the district court, 34 in the NSW Supreme Court as well as assisting 8,617 court attendees.
VWCCS Newcastle Manager Christine Tyler says they are currently seeking volunteers to join the team of court support officers and those manning the information and reception desk.
Key attributes for applicants are their professional manner, highly effective communication and listening skills and an ability to provide support especially when confronted with difficult and often emotionally charged situations.
