Volunteers set to clean 'weird stuff' out of Chain O'Lakes

May 06--Floating logs, plastic bags, old tires, fishing line and handfuls of weird items always turn up during the annual Fox River Chain O'Lakes Waterway Clean-up.

"We get tons of garbage," said Ron Barker, executive director of the Fox Waterway Agency, which will use its barges to collect the garbage picked up by volunteers between 8 a.m. and noon Saturday during the 14th annual clean-up.

"We get some real weird stuff," he added, noting they have found an old Model T car transmission, a living room set including a sofa and chairs, "and we've even had sunken boats. Last year, we filled up four, 40-yard dumpsters. The volunteers do a bang up job."

The Antioch High School environmental club cleans up around the C J Smith Resort at 25315 W. Grass Lake Road in Antioch; while homeowners, duck hunters and boat owners focus their efforts on the Broken Oar Marina at 614 Rawson Bridge Road, Port Barrington.

Other stations to volunteer at include Captain's Quarters, 38283 N. Bolton Place, Antioch; Haling's Resort at 26365 W. Lotus Road, Antioch; and the Thirsty Turtle Beach Bar at 42273 N. Woodbine Ave., Antioch. For volunteer opportunities in McHenry County, call the McHenry County Conservation District at (815) 338-6223 ext. 1234.

Interested residents are encouraged to register at any of the locations or join in by cleaning up around any other public lakefront areas.
