The exodus of athletes and other foreign participants in the Tokyo Paralympic Games reached its peak on Monday with about 4,000 people leaving Japan, according to the Games' organizing committee.
Athletes and their associates lined up at departure counters at Haneda Airport, their luggage on carts. Volunteers who worked at the Games gathered in the lobby and saw them off, holding up cards inscribed with a message of thanks and handing them origami cranes.
Germany's Edina Muller, 38, thanked the volunteers, saying their hard work on behalf of the athletes made it possible for her to have an unforgettable experience. Muller won the gold medal in women's para canoe.
The Paralympics came to an end on Sunday.
