Volunteers needed to decorate Newcastle War Memorial with 20,000 knitted red poppies

Volunteers are required to help decorate a Newcastle War Memorial with knitted poppies ahead of Remembrance Day.

The poppies were knitted and crocheted last year in the run up to the 100th anniversary of the end of the First World War , before they displayed around the Old Eldon Square monument as a heartwarming tribute to those who gave their lives in conflict.

The poppies, which were made by volunteers , have been kept in storage so they can be used for future Remembrance Day commemorations. Newcastle City Council says the handmade poppies will be back this year. But it needs your help to tie the tributes on railings around the War Memorial ahead of the Remembrance Day parade on Sunday November 10.

Councillor Karen Kilgour, armed forces champion for Newcastle City Council said: "The poppy appeal last year captured the imagination of thousands of volunteers across Newcastle and created a memorable and fitting tribute to help the city mark 100 years since the signing of the Armistice.

"We want to recognise the hard work of all those involved in creating the poppies by putting them back on display for the public to once again enjoy in the lead up to Remembrance Day.

"It is important that each year we remember those who have sacrificed everything for their country and the poppy display will once again provide the perfect opportunity for us to do this."

Volunteers are asked to gather at Old Eldon Square on Monday November 4 from noon to help thread and display the poppies. The council says the plan is weather dependent.

The poppies will remain on display until Tuesday November 11.
