Rescue workers and volunteers battled for hours to save orcas that had become stranded on a beach.

Seven killer whales were spotted beached near the town of Mar Chiquita on Monday.

About 150 people, including city workers, firefighters and marine biologists, managed to pull six of the orcas to safety in a six-hour operation.

Ropes were used to drag whales weighing three to four tons into the water.

Volunteer Natalia Villa, 20, said: “I regret that we could not move the biggest one, he died there in front of us.”

Officials do not know why the orcas beached themselves, saying they did not appear to be ill.
