Volkswagen ID.4 takes 2021 World Car of the Year title

THE all-electric Volkswagen ID.4 SUV has been crowned 2021 World Car of the Year.

The popular German marque’s machine was chosen by a panel of 93 journalists from 28 countries out of an initial entry list of 24 vehicles.

VW boss Ralf Brandstatter said: “We are particularly pleased because the jury honoured a great idea and a great team.

“The first ID. model for the key markets of Europe, China and the US carries our electric offensive around the globe.”

The new Defender picked up the World Car Design of the Year gong – a record sixth win of this award for Jaguar Land Rover.

JLR creative chief Gerry McGovern said: “Our vision was to make a 21st century Defender by pushing the engineering, technology and design boundaries while retaining its famed DNA and off-road capability.

“The result is a compelling 4x4 that resonates with customers on an emotional level.”

The Honda e was named World Urban Car, while the Porsche 911 Turbo lifted the Performance Car title and the Mercedes-Benz S-Class took Luxury Car honours.
