An explosive eruption occurred at Mt. Io in the Kirishima mountain range in Kyushu at around 3:39 p.m. on Thursday, according to the Japan Meteorological Agency.
Following the eruption, the agency raised the volcanic alert level from Level 2 (do not approach the crater) to Level 3 (do not approach the volcano.)
The agency said that it confirmed the scattering of volcanic rocks around the crater of Mt. Io. According to the agency, it is possible that the volcanic activity will further increase.
The agency has issued a warning for an area approximately within a two-kilometer radius of Mt. Io of large flying volcanic rocks and pyroclastic flows.
