KUSHIRO, Hokkaido -- Ice bubbles have appeared on the frozen surface of Lake Akan in Kushiro, Hokkaido, creating a magnificent view.

The bubbles are formed when volcanic gases rising from the bottom of the lake are trapped by the ice.

According to the Akankohan Eco-Museum Center, bubbles of various shapes appeared in the middle of this month as the surface of the lake began to freeze.

Visitors will be able to see the bubbles until the lake surface is covered with snow. Due to the danger involved, a staffer at the center urged visitors to walk on the lake with a guide.
