I am writing to you about the most important national debate we have lived through during the last 10 years – the impact of the Brexit vote and our relationship with Europe. Far from settling the arguments, the past decade has been marked by ever greater discord and division. At The Independent, we want to find a better way forward – and we want you to join us as we launch a new editorial campaign to rebuild Britain’s relationship with Europe that will bring you the news, insight and expertise to shape the debate.
The world is moving fast and the UK’s relationship with Europe is crucial. Russia is waging a war on the continent, economies are about to be transformed by AI, and the established world order has been turned on its head by Donald Trump.
That is why we are bringing you a new editorial focus on what should happen next – and how new alliances with our European neighbours can create a more prosperous and safer UK. These are the key questions at the heart of our Europe: The Way Back series.

At the time of the referendum, The Independent campaigned for a second vote so the public could have their say on what Brexit should actually mean. Ten years on, this is not a return to old arguments or an attempt to ignore a democratic decision. This is about the future and how we repair the damage inflicted over the past decade to forge a better future.
We will bring you expert opinion, news and analysis to reflect and provoke debate about where our relationship with Europe goes next. We will launch a new newsletter that captures our thinking and creates a new community of readers who – like us – want a better relationship with our neighbours. And we will host live events where you can ask the questions that matter most to you.
From trade and investment to defence and security, from free movement for young people to scientific collaboration, and from dealing with migration to responding to economic uncertainty, the case for closer cooperation is hard to ignore. But the decisions to get there are complex and need to be debated to get them right.
We will bring you insight from the leading politicians, thinkers, business leaders and advocates for a different way forward, examining evidence as well as ideology to help us get there.
The debate about Europe is not over. It has entered a new phase. We hope you will join us as we launch Europe: The Way Back.
