Voice of the Sunday People: Save Our Soldiers campaign helps win £10m for vets

The Sunday People has tirelessly campaigned on behalf of our armed forces veterans.

Our Save Our Soldiers crusade is based on giving those who come back from war zones the care they need and deserve.

It means the MoD acknowledging the struggles they face.

And it means providing the right support for our brave men and women.

Now, finally, the Ministry of Defence has taken a step in the right direction.

Incoming Defence Secretary Penny Mordaunt has wasted no time setting her stall out and backing veterans – to the tune of £10million.

Crucially, £9million of that cash will go will go to boost mental health projects.

This is great news and a welcome move from Ms Mordaunt, who looks like she intends a
complete overhaul of the mental health support services for veterans.

The MoD will beef up its networks for helping armed forces personnel to get support.

That includes pointing them in the right direction for benefits, compensation and pensions.

And a new study will look into the risks veterans face when returning to civilian life.

Manchester University will examine data from inquests where a former veteran has taken their own life.

These are welcome developments and an indication the Government is at last taking this crisis seriously.

But we cannot afford to be complacent. We’ll keep up the pressure until our veterans get the very best of care.

They’ve fought for us in some of the most dangerous places in the world. The least we can do is keep fighting for them.
