Voice of the Sunday Mirror: Suspending Parliament for political motives is a disgrace

Suspending Parliament for political motives is a disgraceful move for any democratically elected prime minister.

But then Boris Johnson was not democratically elected – unless you count the votes of just 0.13 per cent of the population.

So we are not governed by someone with much respect for democracy.

But reversing Mr Johnson’s outrageous assault on the constitution is likely to prove difficult, no matter how many protesters take to the streets.

That means MPs have until the end of this week to stop Mr Johnson inflicting a no-deal catastrophe on our country.

The rebel alliance of Tories, Labour, Lib Dems, SNP and smaller parties have the numbers to defeat this dangerous government.

What they don’t have is an agreed strategy.

They are not so much an alliance as a loose collection of warring tribes.

They have already thwarted their own most promising route to success – an interim government to delay a calamitous no-deal Brexit and organise a general election.

But there are other parliamentary procedures they can use to prevent Mr Johnson.

However, it will only work if they put their own interests aside and act in the national interest.

Which means they must work together.
