Voice of the People: 'Theresa May should now weep for Scunthorpe workers'

Theresa May stood outside Downing Street this week and wept at losing her job.

That’s understandable. It’s very upsetting to be out of work. But as sad as she was, her plight is nothing compared to what is going on in the rest of the country.

Just a few days before the PM resigned, the devastating news broke that British Steel had gone into administration.

That’s 20,000 jobs in the plants and the supply chain. It will tear the heart out of already fragile communities. And it has happened on Mrs May’s watch.

Since she entered 10 Downing Street three years ago, her time as PM has been plagued by disaster.

Some of it, admittedly, not of her making. Brexit has dominated the political agenda. And the
failure to negotiate properly has led to years of neglect.

If we look away from the stalemate for a second, we see a country with too few police officers, schools in crisis and an NHS creaking at the seams.

In the next two years, 40 per cent of children will be living in poverty. That’s because families – working families – can’t get by.

This is due to years of neglect, drastic cuts to public spending and a failure to develop any sort of long-term plan.

What plan is in place for Scunthorpe, for example, if steel cannot be saved? If the industry cannot be saved, what happens to the people? Is there a plan for relief, for retraining, for equipping people for future roles?

Or will these communities go the way of so many others, neglected and left behind?

We need a sensible, proper, serious plan for the future of our country. But to do that we will need a sensible, proper, serious, government.
