Voice of the People: Stop the sale of innocent protected species online

Quite who would want a dead monkey as a gift is beyond us.

Endangered creatures have been slain, stuffed and put up for sale, with the advert claiming: “This home decoration will be a great gift for a birthday, an anniversary or a present.”

It’s the public face of an incredibly sick trade.

Protected species - birds, monkeys, and other creatures - are up for grabs on eBay.

Our investigation found some sellers who have traded hundreds of the trophies.

And Brits are spending thousands a year on them.

Whether it’s legal or not experts are horrified.

Katheryn Wise, from Wildlife Animal Protection says this kind of buying sustains a sick trade in the hunting and trading of species - some of them endangered.

eBay say this kind of thing is banned from their platform and have taken down the offending listings.

But they were there in the first place.

And their filters must be toughened up to ensure they don’t return.

We have to do our part as well.

That means not buying from the internet or when we’re abroad unless we’re certain of the origin and the right licenses are held.

Some people have an interest in taxidermy - it’s an amazingly popular hobby - but they still need to check they’re obeying the rules.

And as for the rest of us, do you really want to present your loved one with the birthday gift of a red fox hunted to death and riddled with bullet holes, as one of the adverts proudly boasted?

No. You don’t.

If you’re that stuck for a present that you’re combing the internet for murdered wildlife just remember: there’s never anything wrong with vouchers.

Future hope for cancer toddler

Two-year-old Esmée Todd is having treatment for a cancer that has spread to her little lungs.

And doctors have taken the incredible step of removing and freezing one of her ovaries - so in future Esmée can have children.

The decision to freeze Esmée’s womb gives the family the strength to plan for her future.

They know there’s a hard road ahead, and they pray for their little girl every day - that she responds to treatment and recovers.

And that one far-off day she can hold in her arms a baby of her own.
