Voice of the Mirror: We need to end the old boys' network at the heart of Government

Cronyism costs us all

Cronyism at the heart of the Government is a scandal at the expense of taxpayers, the British public and the effective running of the country.

David Cameron, or “Dodgy Dave” as Dennis Skinner was kicked out of the House of Commons for calling the then Prime Minister, appears only the top of a deeper corruption of our political system.

If the rules allowed a senior civil servant to join the scandal-hit firm, Greensill Capital, part-time while still working for the Government then these rules are wrong.

The revolving door between public service and profit-hungry organisations is spinning against good government. Even the possibility of a potential conflict of interest raises questions which should never be posed.

What is a cosy system for Cameron and others, including Chancellor Rishi Sunak and Health Secretary Matt Hancock, is uncomfortable for all of us outside their elite, back-scratching little circle.

We need to end this old boys’ network. Now.

Gloom or bust

People are entitled to enjoy hard-won freedoms – which leaves Boris Johnson suddenly sounding like a gloomster.

The PM is inappropriately upbeat at the wrong times. He promised in March last year we would turn the tide against the virus in 12 weeks then in the summer and autumn that life would be back to near normal by Christmas 2020. And he is getting it wrong again.

Of course people returning to cafes, pubs, restaurants, shops, hairdressers, gyms and everywhere reopening must be responsible.

But however cautious the Prime Minister now sounds, he will have only himself to blame if his decision to lift lockdown backfires.

Roux will win?

Screening the delayed final of BBC1’s MasterChef tonight may calm viewers angry it was cancelled last Friday.

The wait has only heated up the public’s anticipation for the kitchen showdown
