Voice of the Mirror: We deserve a better choice than Jeremy Hunt and Boris Johnson

The country deserves better than the choice between Jeremy Hunt and Boris Johnson to be the next Prime Minister.

When they are not engaged in an arms race to see who can offer the most generous tax cuts to the rich, they are chucking out policies that will drag us back to the dark ages.

Mr Hunt has abandoned all pretence of being a moderate by backing the repeal of the Hunting Act and favouring tougher restrictions on abortion.

His opponent is a dangerous rogue who has twice been sacked for lying and was a national embarrassment as Foreign Secretary.

Our revelation that he approved a luxury development by two property tycoons raises further questions about his judgement.

The two men vying to be Prime Minister care more about their privileged chums than the good of the country.

Stump up

No Tory should be able to look a pensioner in the face after allowing their precious free TV licences to be axed.

Figures show that more than two million widows and widowers are to lose the benefit.

A poll for Age UK today shows there is overwhelming support across all age groups for keeping free TV licences for the over-75s.

Theresa May had the brass neck to say the BBC should think again when the broadcaster has been forced into this unenviable position by her government.

The Prime Minister should do the decent thing and stump up the funding as promised in their manifesto.

On a high

The closure of hundreds of William Hill shops is yet another reminder of how tough conditions are on the high street.

But independent shops are leading the fightback.

That is why the Mirror is proud to back the High Street Hero category in this year’s Great British High Street Awards.
