Voice of the Mirror: We all need to respect social distancing so life can go back to normal

With the country basking in glorious sunshine you can understand why so many families headed to the beach.

A trip to the seaside was all the more appealing after three months of lockdown.

The vast majority behaved responsibly and continued to observe social distancing rules.

Unfortunately, a thoughtless minority let the sun go to their heads.

Bournemouth had to declare a major incident after being overwhelmed by visitors.

Other resorts saw staff abused and their beaches strewn with litter and detritus.

Photographs showed there were frequent breaches of the two-metre rule.

There are now fears the behaviour of a selfish few could cause a second Covid wave.

Mixed messages from the Government have not helped but this is not solely the fault of ministers. The successful easing of the lockdown requires everyone to act responsibly.

The more we respect the guidance, the quicker life can return to normal.

Taking stand

Keir Starmer yesterday showed what decisive leadership looks like.

Having promised a zero tolerance approach to anti-Semitism he was as good as his word with his sacking of Rebecca Long-Bailey.

Allies of the former Shadow Education Secretary feel she has been hard done by and the move could reignite divisions in Labour.

But the party leader should be applauded for taking a firm stand on an issue that has become a stain on his party’s reputation.

It stands in contrast to Boris Johnson’s failure to dismiss Dominic Cummings or Robert Jenrick. Unlike Mr Starmer, the PM has been exposed as weak and unprincipled.

Help survivors

Today marks the fifth anniversary of the terror attack in Tunisia that cost 30 Britons their lives.

Survivors of the atrocity say their plight was forgotten as soon as they landed back in the UK. They deserve so much better.
