Against the odds Labour pulled off a remarkable victory in Peterborough.
Few gave the party a chance in the by-election when its former MP Fiona Onasanya was convicted of perverting the course of justice and ousted from Parliament.
The Leave-voting seat was regarded as fertile territory for Nigel Farage’s Brexit Party. But determined Labour saw off that threat and also pushed the Tories into third place.
They did so by talking about the issues that matter on the doorstep, such as education cuts, police funding and fly-tipping.
The margin of victory may have been narrow but it shows Labour is the only party which has the answers to this country’s problems.
Yes, Brexit is important to voters but they also care deeply about schools, the NHS and the environment.
Labour showed it is hungry for power – and the people of Peterborough showed they are hungry for change.
Honours blow
Some of the nation’s finest have been rightly recognised in the Queen’s birthday honours list.
There are medals for holocaust survivors, charity workers and foster carers.
Oscar winner Olivia Colman could not be more deserving of her CBE, while fans will be delighted to see Elvis Costello has an OBE.
So it is a shame that, yet again, the awards have been tainted. In one of her last acts, Theresa May has secured a knighthood for the Home Office official who played a major role in the Windrush scandal.
This is an insult to the victims of the hostile environment created on her watch and it is an insult to those who are worthy of recognition.
