Failing the test again
Another day, another Government coronavirus blunder.
Test and tracing errors that may have been understandable when the pandemic was declared in March are unforgivable in October.
The 16,000 unreported Covid-19 cases and the delay in contacting many times that number of endangered people show that the system is seriously ailing.
Matt Hancock played down the consequences.
When he insisted the error didn’t substantially change the Government’s assessment of the epidemic, it smacked of someone used to brushing disasters under the carpet.
He has certainly had a lot of practice after the catastrophe of delaying lockdown and the calamities involving care homes and PPE.
When lives and livelihoods are at risk, a basic level of competence shouldn’t be too much to ask.
But we repeatedly discover this shambolic Government failing in its primary duty to protect the population of our great country.
We deserve much better.

The Chancellor reverting to spending cuts and tax rises will hurt people and damage the economy when the best way to improve public finances is to turbo-charge growth.
What the Tories tend to call hard choices always prove hard for low and middle income families as well as the disabled and the old.
The shine is fast fading on Sunak as he goes from furlough hero to mass unemployment villain. People can’t afford fresh Tory austerity.
