Voice of the Mirror: Trump has 'thrown a firebomb' after US troops leave Syria

When Islamic State threatened to create a caliphate in Syria, the West turned to the Kurds for help.

Answering our call, the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces, trained by Britain and the US, led the fight which saw the eventual defeat of the bloodthirsty terrorists.

Their reward for this heroic effort which cost them 11,000 lives is to be cut adrift by Donald Trump.

In one of the most reckless actions by a President, Trump ordered US troops to withdraw from northern Syria.

Turkey’s President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has seized on this vacuum to launch a military offensive with a view to using Kurdish lands to house millions of Syrian refugees.

Tens of thousands of Islamic State fighters under Kurdish guard could be set free to resume their deadly war, which will increase the risk of terror attacks in Western Europe.

Trump has thrown a fire bomb into one of the most sensitive regions in the world risking further bloodshed and greater uncertainty in a place scarred by decades of violence.

OAPs at risk

The cost of Britain’s housing crisis has been a generation unable to afford their own home and paying sky-high rents.

But the victims are not just the young. The charity Shelter today warns that thousands face being made homeless when they retire.

The cap on benefits means private rents now outstrip the housing allowance in 97% of England.

As a result, many elderly can no longer afford to cover the shortfall and face the frightening prospect of losing their home.

They are being punished by the Tories’ punitive welfare reforms and the failure to build enough affordable housing.

The Conservatives have betrayed them.
