Voice of the Mirror: 'Tomorrow's vote does not draw a line under Brexit'

When MPs vote tomorrow they hold the future of Britain in their hands.

They will be asked to choose between prolonging the Brexit process or backing Boris Johnson’s flawed deal.

Brexiteers promised the UK would have a Rolls-Royce future out of the EU. Under Johnson’s plan, we will travel in an old banger.

His deal will hit people in their pockets, put jobs at risk and leave the NHS vulnerable to US corporate giants. Hard-won workers’ rights, such as paid holidays and equal pay for part-time staff, could be swept aside.

If the Leave campaign had presented this offer in 2016 as the best Britain could hope for it would have struggled to win the referendum.

Many MPs appreciate the UK is desperate to move on and see the back of Brexit.

Some will back Johnson’s deal in the vain hope it will make the issue go away.

We understand this sentiment, but today’s vote does not draw a line under Brexit.

It is the staging post before we begin protracted trade negotiations with the EU.

That is why, when MPs vote today, they must decide what is best for the economy, for people’s livelihoods and for the country.
