Voice of the Mirror: Theresa May shows 'tin ear' with TV address

Theresa May showed her tin ear by messing up her message to the country in her TV address on Wednesday.

But the PM only had to open her eyes today to get the message from more than a million marchers.

That they turned out in such numbers shows how concerned the British people now are about Brexit. That includes the Leavers who did not march. They are no less worried. In that, this divided nation is united.

The PM has let them all down.

By stubbornly clinging to her doomed deal, she has humiliated our country and herself. And brought us to the brink of catastrophe.

MPs will now seize control of Brexit this week in the search for an alternative.

As Sir Oliver Letwin tells us today, they must be prepared to bend on their own preferred options and be ready to compromise.

This newspaper believes that a permanent UK-wide customs union would be the least worst outcome.

But we accept that we must compromise too. We could live with Common Market 2.0, which would keep the UK in the single market.

Jeremy Corbyn’s Norway Plus for a customs union with single market alignment has much to commend it.

A second referendum would be dangerous for our democracy – revoking Article 50 even more so. But either is better than No Deal.

Nigel Farage addresses '200' at Brexit march as '1 million' back Remain protest

If the UK hasn’t left the EU by May 22, negotiations will have to start all over again. A long delay will be inevitable.

It is clear Mrs May cannot lead those negotiations. She must stand aside for someone who can.

If she isn’t forced out sooner, the date she should pencil into her diary for the No10 removal vans is April 12 when we will sign up to EU elections.

Getting Leavers and Remainers back in harmony is not a task for which Mrs May is equipped. That’s why she cannot remain. She must leave.
