Voice of the Mirror: Theresa May alienated Corbyn and the Right, now she's stuck

It is not hugely surprising that Brexit talks between the Government and Labour broke down.

Theresa May’s door was finally open but her mind remained closed, as she is a blinkered Conservative Prime Minister incapable of dealing fairly with other parties.

May now has nowhere to run. She has alienated Jeremy Corbyn on the Left, along with the uncompromising no-deal fanatics on the Right of her own party. Northern Ireland’s hardline DUP won’t play ball either.

With no agreement on the horizon it increasingly looks as if the UK will remain in the European Union for some time and might participate in next month’s elections.

The PM’s fight to survive continues, as
does the Brexit deadlock. It’s about time out squabbling MPs let the people decide.

Bombing plea

Relatives of 21 people murdered by the IRA in the 1974 Birmingham pub bombings deserve to be heard when they demand justice and a fresh police probe.

The inquest verdict pinned the blame where it should be, instead of letting those with blood on their hands cowardly shift some responsibility on to the police.

The bombings are a grim reminder of the horrors of the Troubles, before the landmark 1998 Good Friday Agreement finally ended a civil war in Northern Ireland that claimed so many casualties elsewhere.

Politicians recklessly endangering the Good Friday Agreement should remember what came before it.

Elderly shame

Nearly one million pensioners are just a £200 bill away from financial ruin and official figures show another two million live in poverty.

So next time a Right-wing politician shouts that the elderly have never had it so good, let’s challenge the ignorant fool to swap bank accounts for a month and see how they like counting every penny.
