Voice of the Mirror: The Prime Minster has to come clean about the lockdown

The great British public is entitled to know when crisis restrictions might be eased, but Boris Johnson was long on bluster and short on detail yesterday.

The PM delivering a scripted statement outside No10 to avoid questions at the Downing Street press conference was frustrating for a country yearning to be treated as adults.

More traffic on our roads and companies such as Greggs partially reopening show a nation tip-toeing into a new phase – while the Government’s marooned in the old.

We urge the Premier to come clean, to discuss options publicly and give us a sign of where we’re heading and when.

Nobody wants a second coronavirus surge that would kill hundreds more and damage the economy again. But we’re not kids.

If we won’t have to wait much longer for change, tell us. And if Johnson thinks we must wait a lot longer, tell us that.

Quiet tribute

The official announcement that 82 NHS and 16 social-care workers have died is a grim reminder of the debt of honour owed to key workers risking their lives to save ours and keep Britain functioning.

So today, at 11am, please, if you can, stop, reflect and give thanks during the minute’s silence for the efforts and bravery of ordinary working men and women.

Whether working in shops or factories or cleaning or driving, huge numbers of grafters – not only those in health and social care – do essential jobs we must value.

Let the silence be deafening as we demonstrate our quiet gratitude.

Proud for Max

Blossoming after a heart transplant, Max Johnson’s smiling face and warm words are testimony to why the Mirror was right to Change the Law for Life.

We’re immensely proud that England next month will finally adopt an opt-out system which means more people will receive new organs to smile again like Max.
