Voice of the Mirror: Super League collapse shows fans must be in charge to protect clubs

The humiliation of the greedy owners of six of British football’s greatest teams is a moment to fortify fan power.

It should give supporters continuing influence over the clubs they adore so the sport can never again be hijacked by a cartel.

This is a golden opportunity for institutional change and to tilt the balance of power away from financial speculators towards loyal fans.

Throw that away and this crisis will replay in the future with a potentially worse result.

So the “fan-led” inquiry by Tory former Sports Minister Tracey Crouch must be broad, open and permitted to think radically.

The fear is Tory old Etonian rugby man Boris Johnson will think the problem is solved.

He saw where the crowd was heading and ran to the front to claim credit for defeating the unsporting European franchise plan.

We want fans in charge. Permanently.

Number’s up

NHS workers don’t have Boris Johnson’s mobile number so he is restricting nurses to an insulting, measly 1% pay award.

Neither do teachers, police officers, council workers, soldiers, firefighters, prison officers, civil servants and public service frontline staff who kept Britain going in the pandemic.

So, no wage increases for them.

Most taxpayers on low and middle earnings can’t send him a personal message demanding no extra tax so he’s about to put up their bills by freezing thresholds.

And legions of self-employed and freelance workers denied Government pandemic financial support received no assurances the Chancellor was guaranteeing they would be OK.

This sleaze scandal shows Johnson rules for a clique of billionaires, chums and Tory donors who have really got his number.

Heartfelt HM

The Queen’s birthday message shows she appreciates the value of well-wishers.

Her thanks for the “support and kindness” shown since the death of her husband is the heartfelt gratitude of an elderly widow.
