Brexit would be the funniest ­Westminster farce in history if this crisis wasn’t so serious.

It’s not just our jobs, livelihoods, the economy, national security and our country’s position in the world that are at stake, but also public confidence in politics and politicians, democracy and Parliament.

The votes by MPs in Westminster underlined the depth of the chaos.

We all want a reasonable way forward – despite the differing views and incompetent Theresa May’s unique achievement in uniting Remainers and Leavers against her.

The hopeless PM and rudderless Conservative government have both lost control and are part of the problem, not the answer.

With Brexit on Friday effectively cancelled, and perhaps postponed for many months as even ministers and MPs committed to quitting Europe fight among themselves, this is a good moment to start a national conversation.

We need to discover what people now really want if we’re to make any sense of this mess.

Privatised energy suppliers have found another nice earner as they sit on close to £1billion of customers’ money.

Overpayments said to be averaging £108 per household after a mild winter should be returned immediately instead of at the leisure of firms easing their cash flow and, perhaps in some cases, earning a tidy sum in interest.

Just as prices rocket when wholesale costs rise, then come down slowly when they drop, we suspect companies are quicker to ask for more money than they are to return it.

Let’s turn up the heat on these cash guzzlers and demand the Government takes action to get overpayments returned within a month.
