Voice of the Mirror: Showboating Boris is looking after Number 1

Boris Johnson gave his first statement as Prime Minister yesterday...and there was little to commend it.

Asked 10 direct questions by Jeremy Corbyn, he failed to answer a single one.

Instead he showed contempt for the Commons and the public by showboating when he should have been serious and blustering when he should have been straightforward.

It is hardly surprising he is running from scrutiny when he has such a cavalier approach.

He is recklessly driving us towards a no-deal Brexit without any care for the consequences.

If we crash out it will put firms and farmers out of business, threaten medical supplies and force food bills to rise.

Those who will suffer will not be the PM and his privileged friends but the towns and communities which can least afford it.

What became clear yesterday is that Johnson is interested only in his own survival.

His Brexit strategy has nothing to do with what is best for the country and everything to do with heading off Nigel Farage.

Hot and hotter

Few on holiday will complain about yesterday’s record temperatures.

The heatwave is also great news for our seaside resorts.

But is less welcome for people stuck at work or having to travel on the badly disrupted rail network.

We used to joke that the British summer started on the last day of July and ended on the first day of August.

Not any more.

Scientists agree that the extreme weather is linked to climate change.

The five hottest summers in Europe since 1500 have been in the last 16 years.

Unless we act, these weather patterns will be become more frequent and more intense.

Wunderland

SUNDERLAND is expected to escape a cull of thousands of workers by the car giant Nissan.

This is a vote of confidence in British industry and a wonderful tribute to the unions and the staff at the plant.
