Voice of the Mirror: Rishi Sunak finally offering additional support to workers

Not before time Rishi Sunak will soon set out additional support for workers hit by the coronavirus crisis.

The need for action could not be greater.

Firms already on the brink are now having to cope with the introduction of additional lockdown measures just as the Chancellor’s furlough scheme is about to come to an end.

Companies in the hospitality, aviation and leisure industries have warned that millions of posts are at risk.

This is why Labour and the trade unions have been calling for weeks for the Government to maintain the job retention scheme for those sectors worst affected by the outbreak.

Finally, Mr Sunak appears to have listened but only after causing millions of workers unnecessary anxiety.

On Thursday, he must set out a package of measures that is lasting, fair and effective. He should look to Germany and France, which have pledged to support workers until at least the end of next year.

British firms and employees need the same security, not a series of piecemeal policies.

Lorries lined up during a trial at the former Manston Airport site in Kent (PA)

Rocky road

In 100 days’ time we finally leave the EU. The Government has had months to prepare for this moment but it is clear we are far from ready.

As things stand, lorry drivers will need a special permit to drive into Kent just for the right to join a queue of up to 7,000 vehicles wanting to cross the Channel.

By the Government’s own admission most businesses are still not fully prepared for the end of the transition period.

After pushing for Brexit, at the very least the Government should have been able to deliver a smooth departure.

Strung along

Boris Johnson and Donald Trump will be among the puppets featured when Spitting Image returns to our screens.

It gives a whole new meaning to the phrase dummy run.
