Voice of the Mirror: Return of Cyprus 'gang rape' teen raises questions in UK

The British teen at the centre of the Cyprus “gang rape” scandal will require support now that she is home, but her return is not the end of this case.

Her conviction is a possible miscarriage of justice, she deserves to have her name cleared.

Protests by Cypriot women demonstrate the growing belief in the country that courts and authorities in the country are hostile to vulnerable women when they go to the police complaining they have been sexually assaulted.

Visitors to popular holiday resorts, as well as nationals, deserve to know that investigations into alleged sex offences will be thoroughly and sensitively investigated and that any suspect will have access to a lawyer and their interviews recorded.

Our own Government should not be smug when prosecutions here have fallen despite rape allegations to the police in England and Wales doubling in six years.

Look at the law

Locking a grandmother suffering from multiple sclerosis in a police cell for eight hours because she makes cannabis-laced chocolate bars was unnecessary.

Lesley Gibson turned to cannabis when her NHS prescription was cancelled, surely our drug laws now need relaxing.

This is not an argument to scrap all drug laws or advocating their widespread use but a plea to approve limited medicinal use for those with serious conditions.

The jury is out over the benefits of cannabis use and some of the risks are undeniable.

It is a waste of police time for officers to detain grandmothers with MS.

Let’s finally have the informed, adult debate that our country has avoided for too long.

Nice one Elton

Elton John has donated one million Australian Dollars – £500,000 – to the bush fire appeal in the country.

The singer has put his money where his mouth is and is determined not to let the sun go down on Australia.
