Voice of the Mirror: Pub landlords 'abandoned' by Government deserve support

Back our boozers

Support is growing for the Mirror’s call to rescue pubs with £2billion from tax breaks returned by supermarket chains.

It shows the concern among communities that vital hubs could be lost in the virus crisis.

Supermarkets giving back the cash is to be applauded when they have enjoyed increased profits – but this is also a moment when online retailers need to pay fair too.

The likes of Amazon, criticised for avoiding UK taxation by routing online sales through Luxembourg, has lagged behind.

Pub landlords deserve our backing because they have suffered more than most other businesses, largely abandoned by a Government unable to appreciate their true value.

A call to arms

We all share a vested interest in Boris Johnson getting the virus vaccination programme right.

Presentation and publicity surrounding the initial inoculations next week, featuring members of the public and trusted figures, is vital to overcome the nerves of a significant minority of the population.

Pictures of nurses, doctors and other staff in the National Health Service queueing for jabs would be reassuring.

But there is one person above everybody else who could win over the sceptics.

The Queen doing her duty and agreeing to be pictured receiving the vaccination, particularly if her children do the same, would serve the country wonderfully well.

Would you, Ma’am?

Branching out

Festive trees are like dogs – they’re not just for Christmas.

Rising numbers of households are starting to rent trees, rather than buy, then sending them back in January to be replanted.

Growers branching into this brave new world are the champions of recycling.

Families taking up this green idea could even have this year’s decoration back next year, bigger and better.
