Voice of the Mirror: Prince William's LGBTQI+ support shows stand against intolerance

Prince William has taken an important stand against hatred and intolerance.

The future king said he would fully support his children if they were gay.

A few years ago it would have been unthinkable to hear such words from a member of the Royal Family.

His comments were not just a welcome show of support, they illustrated how much attitudes have changed.

The prince was right to note discrimination and prejudice towards LGBT+ people still exists. Homosexuality remains taboo in some fields, such as professional football.

The recent violent attack on a young lesbian couple on a London bus also shows gay people are frequently subject to abuse and hatred.

There is much more we need to do to make our country a more tolerant society.

The words from the prince are a step in the right direction.

Border Shame

The photograph of Óscar Alberto Martínez Ramírez and his 23-month-old daughter Valeria has shocked the world.

They went in search of the American dream. They ended up face down dead on the banks of the Rio Grande trying to cross the border.

Everyone in America is now searching their conscience. Everyone, that is, except Donald Trump, whose hard line on immigration is partly responsible for this tragedy.

The President’s tough asylum controls have led to a backlog of cases at the border with Mexico, which has forced migrants to risk their lives as they attempt to enter the US illegally.

They want to escape violence, poverty and corruption. People want safety at their borders but no immigration system should come at the cost of basic dignity and humanity.

Lionesses Roar

Good luck to the Lionesses tonight in their quarter-final against Norway in the Women’s World Cup.

Scorching temperatures mean the heat is on but we are sure they’ll do the country proud.
