Voice of the Mirror: PM risks public backlash without Covid passports evidence

Downing Street needs to show us the scientific evidence for Covid passports after indicating they could be required to shop for clothes in England once lockdown restrictions are lifted.

Boris Johnson urgently needs to publish the detailed case for introducing such widespread checks on what we can and cannot do, or the Prime Minister risks a public as well as a political backlash.

People want to be part of a national conversation, discussing the data and assessing the benefits, rather than being told what to do by a Conservative Government issuing fresh orders.

Everybody accepts virus passports, or certificates as the Government likes to call them, would be required to travel abroad on holiday, showing passengers are jabbed and Covid-free.

But for them to be accepted widely – and extended to shops, pubs, sports venues and large outdoor gatherings – we would need to see how they would work.

Crowning glory

Wanting the monarchy to skip a generation so the Duke of Cambridge, not the Prince of Wales, succeeds the Queen is the British public looking to the future.

Charles, 72, should not take umbrage and instead find pride in the country embracing his eldest son, William.

The British public want William to be king (PA)

But he has waited a long life to be king and will not give up the hereditary succession.

The Prince of Wales has worked hard along with his wife Camilla to improve his and their image, and his charities, including the Prince’s Trust, are respected.

How he responds to what is a vote of confidence in his son rather than a snub to him will define Charles in the immediate future.

He’s 00-heaven

The handsome actor would be stirred not shaken on Her Majesty’s Secret Service.
