Voice of the Mirror: Play by the rules, Boris Johnson

The Prime Minister was rightly admonished by police chiefs yesterday for using cadets as a backdrop for a political speech.

For the sake of a Trump-style photo-op he breached the long-standing code that our police are not dragged into party politics.

A worrying pattern is starting to develop.

We have already seen Johnson try to neuter the Opposition by closing the current Parliamentary session prematurely.

Yesterday he signalled he was willing to ignore a Bill that prevents him pursuing a disastrous no-deal.

This disdain for the law reeks of a PM bloated by his sense of self-entitlement.

We have seen in Hungary and Italy the consequences of what happens if populist leaders use their powers to subvert democracy.

Institutions that protect justice and freedom are undermined while opponents are silenced.

Mr Johnson may feel he is born to rule but he has no right to defy the rules.
