Voice of the Mirror: Our NHS jewel could be seized by greedy US companies after Brexit

The NHS is one of our country’s proudest achievements.

If you fall ill, or suffer a serious injury anywhere in Britain, a qualified professional will treat you for free.

If you have cancer, Alzheimer’s or asthma, your needs will be met by our world-class health service, again with no upfront cost.

But campaigners fear that after a no-deal Brexit all this may be up for grabs.

As Boris Johnson prepares to turn his back on our biggest trading partner - the EU - US predators hover poised to plunder our greatest, most treasured and most important asset.

Big pharma firms and private medical companies cannot wait to make their move and break open the UK healthcare market.

US firms’ inflated prices for key medicines would pile pressure on the cash-strapped service on which all of us, at some point, rely.

Make no mistake, these are private firms whose whole reason for existing is not to save lives; it is to maximise profits.

While ministers have apparently been told not to include the NHS in talks about a post-Brexit trade deal, does anyone truly believe this low-tax, right-wing, Brexiteer Government will protect one of Britain’s greatest creations?

Johnson’s henchmen will be desperate to secure a transatlantic trade alliance to justify their pet project - to dump us squarely in Washington’s sphere of influence.

The NHS is vulnerable to being sacrificed.

The chilling boast of Woody Johnson - the President’s man in London - that the NHS would be “on the table” in future trade talks smashed the Tory lie that America would not prey on our healthcare system.

Be in no doubt, US companies are waiting to exploit what they see as a potential bonanza.

Seventy-one years after Nye Bevan created our NHS, it remains an icon across the globe, a beacon for expert treatment and care...regardless of how much you have.

That must never be lost - no matter how much multibillion-dollar pharma firms spend on lobbying.

Or how desperate the Tories are to plug the gap created by Brexit.
