Voice of the Mirror: Our High Street's futures are at stake so we must act

Since the lockdown our high streets have been eerily quiet. That will change next week as more stores reopen their doors. But they will need your support.

Even before Covid-19 many town centres were going through a difficult time, with many closures and huge job losses.

The virus may turn a challenging situation for the sector into a catastrophic one. The future of our high streets is at stake.

That is why the Daily Mirror is today launching our Shop for Britain campaign.

We must do everything we can to support our shops and shopkeepers. By shopping locally and, whenever possible, buying British, you can help these businesses start to bounce back.

Which shop are you waiting to reopen? Email: features@mirror.co.uk

Every penny you spend, every purchase you make, is a shop kept afloat and a job supported.

By helping our high streets we can help our communities.

It is the local cafes, department stores, independent retailers and clothes shops that give local areas their distinctive character and are the bedrock of the community.

We understand that shopping in the age of Covid will be different.

Adjusting to this will take time but we must do it if we want our high streets to thrive.

There is also a lot more ministers could do to help retailers weather coronavirus and fend off the challenge posed by online.

But we can all play our part by getting Britain shopping again.
