Dom’s out, at long last
Dominic Cummings should have been booted out of Downing Street seven months ago when the Mirror revealed he had breached lockdown rules.
His actions were an insult to all those who had been following the guidance and undermined confidence in the Government.
With characteristic self-indulgence, he is only leaving now because he has lost a power battle within Downing Street.
The fact this turf war took place in the middle of a national crisis tells us a lot about the priorities of the current administration.
No one will mourn the departure of Cummings. His abrasive and divisive style of politics was not just unpleasant but unproductive.
His time in No10 has been a sorry tale of infighting, U-turns, failures and inaction. But Cummings was just an adviser.
It was Boris Johnson who brought him into No10 and indulged his behaviour.
He may have been a disastrous appointment but it is the Prime Minister who is at fault.

These were the victims of the Yorkshire Ripper and today, we remember them. We remember the innocent loss of life. The grief caused. The pain still carried in the hearts of their loved ones.
Peter Sutcliffe never showed any remorse for his sickening crimes. He will lie in a grave of wickedness and contempt.
Not a single tear should be wasted on his passing. Our compassion should be saved for those who suffered and continue to suffer because of the horror he brought to this world.
Hope for future
Lockdown restrictions mean families will not be able to celebrate the beginning of Diwali today in the same way.
We can only hope the prospect of a vaccine offers a brighter future for everyone, whatever their faith, next year.
