Voice of the Mirror: NHS pays the price of Tory neglect

Boris Johnson adviser Dominic Cummings is right about one thing – that the Tories do not care about the NHS.

If they did, there would not be record waiting times at A&Es in England, you wouldn’t have to beg for a GP appointment and nurse numbers wouldn’t be down. Also thousands of minor ops would never have been cancelled.

Tory underfunding has seen £4.29billion cut from capital budgets to prop up day-to-day services. As a result hospitals are falling apart.

In some cases sewage has seeped onto wards, ceilings have collapsed and lifts have been left broken for months.

The failure to reform social care and the cuts to public heath budgets have only increased pressures on stretched hospitals and surgeries.

Johnson's top aide says Tory MPs don't care about the poor or NHS

Mr Johnson is expected to set out in the next few days his plans for the NHS.

Yet again we will hear a Tory Prime Minister claim the health service is safe in their hands.

Patients have grown tired of these hollow statements that fly in the face of the evidence.

The NHS needs proper funding. That can only happen if there’s a Labour government.

Snub for Boris

THE Brecon and Radnorshire by-election has ended Boris Johnson ’s honeymoon.

The Tories elected him in the belief he was the best candidate to revive their fortunes.

But voters in the Welsh seat, held by the Conservatives with an 8,000 majority in 2017, delivered their verdict on Mr Johnson’s appeal by backing the Lib Dems.

This was a disappointing night for Labour too, which could only muster fourth place.

The party may have fallen victim to tactical voting but the result is a reminder of the electoral challenges facing Jeremy Corbyn .

Above all, the result shows that even in leave-voting seats there is no appetite for the PM’s type of Toryism and a no-deal Brexit .

Goalden time

The wait is over. The football season kicks off again today beginning 10 months of tension, jubilation, sorrow and glory.

Whoever you support, try to enjoy the ride.
