Voice of the Mirror: Making social media giants accountable is our challenge

It is shameful that social media giants refused for so long to protect our children.

Lives are at stake, but Facebook, Snapchat, Google and Twitter have only just agreed to work with the Samaritans to remove harmful material from the web. These giant corporations should have done something sooner.

Tragically, we can’t bring back the vulnerable youngsters whose bereaved families blame social media content for their deaths.

But we can make things safer for the future.

Internet firms can no longer dodge responsibility for dangerous online content by claiming that they are platforms, not publishers.

We understand many people’s concerns about a second referendum on Brexit.

There are real worries it could lead to yet more division while risking little resolution.

But Labour chief Jeremy Corbyn now needs to show leadership to his party on this issue ahead of next month’s European elections.

The party agreed a policy of supporting a second referendum if there was no general election. Mr Corbyn must now follow the agreed policy or risk splitting the party.

Labour’s uneasy alliance will disintegrate and an opposition leading in general election opinion polls could plummet to the depths of the bitterly warring, divided Tories.

Today’s National Executive Committee meeting must reflect the mood of Labour members, MPs and, most ­importantly, voters.
