Voice of the Mirror: Johnson insults public by suggesting they don't care about sleaze

Facing an investigation by the Electoral Commission should be a moment of shame for Boris Johnson.

There was no humility from the Prime Minister today. Nor any explanation.

Three times he was asked by Keir Starmer to say who initially funded the refurbishment of the Downing Street flat, three times he failed to answer the question.

Mr Johnson claimed the public were not interested in the sleaze lapping up on the steps of No10 and were more interested in vaccines.

The roll-out of the jabs has been a massive success – thanks to the NHS – but that does not give the Government the right to behave without any regard for the rules.

It is also insulting to the public to suggest they do not care.

People do care if Tory money has been allegedly siphoned off to cover the cost of the PM’s home decorations.

And people care when the Government refuses to name the dozens of individuals who have profited from Covid contracts thanks to their links with the Conservatives.

Johnson’s behaviour is undermining standards in public life.

He is being held to account because that is how we stop our politics from being infected by corruption.

Fostering fear

Northern Ireland's First Minister Arlene Foster has quit (PA)

The resignation of DUP leader Arlene Foster is not a great loss to UK politics but it is concerning for anyone who cares about peace in Northern Ireland.

Ms Foster presided over the ash-for-cash green energy scandal, failed to understand the consequences of Brexit and gave a helping hand to the bigots in her party.

But by the DUP’s standards she was a relative moderate.

The fear now is she will be replaced by a more hardline leader who would rather stoke tensions than build bridges.

Parking mad..

Gareth Wild has realised his dream to park in all 211 spaces at a supermarket.

His six-year parking quest goes to show there’s space for all sorts in this world.
